Men's First Team Friendly Results

On the 20th February the Surrey 1st Team kicked off their 2022 season with their annual match at the world renowned Sunningdale Golf Club. As ever we thank Sunningdale for their hospitality, their commitment to the match and on this occasion thanked them for the hosting of the county championships last summer.

The teams arrived amid one this winter's many storms and after an excellent breakfast it was decided to flip the matches to play singles around the Old Course in the morning and foursomes in the afternoon around the New Course.

The windy weather made for some unusual club selections but thankfully the expected rain held off and enabled us to finish the 8 singles matches.

Sunningdale got off to a great start winning two and halving two of the first four matches to lead 3-1. However, with three wins in the final four matches Surrey managed to get back to parity at lunch.

Unfortunately, with the impending weather approaching it was decided that we would pass on the afternoon’s foursomes and agree on a drawn match.

We once again thank Sunningdale for their hospitality and commitment to the match and look forward to playing them again next year in hopefully better conditions.

The Surrey 1st Team continued their spring matches on the 20th March at Addington Palace in weather more akin to spring. Addington’s greens were as wonderful as ever and we thank their hard-working staff for presenting such an excellent test.

Surrey unleashed their two youngest players, Kris Kim & Oscar Lent out first, and faced former county stalwarts Simon Crockett & Dave Boxall. Unfortunately, the Surrey hares couldn’t buck the fable and the opening match went the way of the Palace.

After the remaining three matches of the morning concluded the score was 2-2 at lunch with all to play for.

Like the Sunningdale match the home side got off to a quick afternoon start moving 5-3 ahead with four matches left out on the course.

However, like the previous match the county tail wagged, and the remaining four points went our way leading to a 7-5 victory.

Special mention must go to Jack Kurzberg and Harry Uzzell, who having joined up due to the slow play (fingers pointed at Crockett and I), both holed their 2nd shots at the 11th hole from over 130 yards simultaneously. With odds of 26 million to one it may be a long time until we see such scenes again. Jack then finished his match 2-2 on the 15th & 16th to record three 2’s in six holes and secure the match for the county.

We once again thank Addington Palace for their hospitality and commitment to the match and look forward to our next two matches vs Roehampton and Hindhead.
