Surrey A Team v The Addington Golf Club

The Surrey A Team’s second match of the 2024 season was an early start on Sunday 24th March at the very long and challenging The Addington Golf Club.

12 talented Surrey elite players were all wondering where the spring weather from the last few days had gone, as what started off as a brisk and windy morning, just seem to turn colder and the wind get stronger as the day went on!

Wrapped up and fuelled with coffee and bacon rolls, both teams headed out to battle!

Group 1 saw Surrey’s Dan Magee and former Addington scratch Captain Chris Powell take on Gareth Owens and Seb Burton, with the home side narrowly edging out a victory on the final green.

Group two was the experienced duo of Surrey Captain Mark Scott and Roehampton’s Scott Stanley.

Experience in the cold and windy conditions was too much for The Addington Captain Paul Jackson and Jeremy Tierman with the Surrey pair taking the victory on the 17th green.

The rising talent of John Ingham and experienced Phil Brittain took on last minute replacement Grant Wallis and Henry Kingsbury in a gruelling battle that once again saw the home team come out on top.

More young stars were on show in group 4 as Surrey’s Alex Horn and Rowan Noble now back from college after finishing his season with a 12-0-1 win record, was in great form defeating Quincy Coulter and Paul Stewart from The Addington.

Experienced Surrey player James Molyneux marvelled at the golf on display from his younger partner Oliver Spencer as they easily defeated Addington’s James Soulsby and Sam Taylor in match 5.

The final match of the morning was the ever reliable Surrey partnership of Mike Ducker and Sean Phillips against Ed Parsons and Alex Soskin.

Sadly for Surrey though, Sean wasn’t feeling his best this weekend, and battled as best as he could only for Surrey to come up one putt too many on the last green.

This meant for an interesting afternoon, as the match was evenly poised 3 – 3 going into lunch.

The afternoon session started out much the same, with the cold relentless 3 club wind seeming into our faces on every shot, but this time the experience of the Surrey players shone through.

The first 6 matches all went Surrey’s way in quick fashion,  putting the match to bed before the rest of the guys could finish!

Great fight backs from Quincy, Sam and Ed for The Addington showed great resolve against a mighty in form Surrey team, but was sadly not enough to turn the match in their favour.

Final Score, 12 ½ to 5 ½

My Thanks goes to Paul and the Addington team for their hospitality and sportsmanship, and to the ongoing commitment from the Surrey County office in supporting the Surrey A Team and it’s players.

With 2 games and 2 wins under the Surrey A Team’s belt so far this season, can we go unbeaten throughout 2024?
