Surrey Golf

Under 14s

Purpose and Aim:

To give talented young golfers the opportunity to play competitive golf in a team environment and better their understanding of the game.

The U13/U14 age group consists of two squads, the U14 league squad and the U14 development squad, and is aimed at boys aged 12 & 13 with a handicap index of 12.0 and below (league squad) or 28.0 and below (development squad). However, these handicap index limits are for guidance only, with other selection criteria also being taken into account, such as away scores, events competed in, potential and attitude.

Training / Coaching:

Both groups have training days throughout the golf season with Surrey coaches. These days normally consist of coaching in the morning and playing the course in the afternoon, whilst being observed by the professionals. All training is based around short game, putting, course strategy and mindset. These sessions are also a great opportunity for some team bonding and forging friendships.

Matches:

The U14s have five matches during the year, with the potential for a sixth, if the team is successful in the league matches. Three of the five matches are England Golf Southeast Group league matches against two other counties. There is one home match and two away matches, and they take the form of triple match play, contested by 10 players from each county. The county that wins the league advances to a final match later in the year.

The fourth U14 match is a friendly match played against Hampshire, where each team consists of four U12 players, four U13 players, and four U14 players (12-a-side total). The format is fourball better ball match play and the fixture alternates between home and away each year.

The fifth match is the annual Sussex Salver, which is contested between Surrey, Hampshire, and Sussex. The format is triple match play, with 12 players from each county.

As well as the U12/U13/U14 friendly match against Hampshire, the U13s have three additional matches during the season.

The first of these is the Triple Shield against Kent & Sussex, which is 8-a-side triple match play.

The U13s also play a friendly match against Essex, which alternates between home and away. The match format is 16-a-side singles match play.

The final U13 match is the Friendship Trophy against Hampshire & Sussex. The match format is 12-a-side triple match play, and this fixture is usually played at the end of the season. As well as these matches, U13 players may also be considered for the U14 matches.

Get Involved:

Boys aged 14 and below are encouraged to get involved in the very successful Rookie Tour events, as these are a great way for players to play competitive golf and show their ability. Please click here to visit the Rookie Tour page on our website for more information.
