Purpose and Aim
The Surrey A Team was set up many years ago to offer clubs in Surrey the opportunity to play scratch competition against the very best category 1 golfers from across the County.
While the matches are very friendly and played in a great spirit they are competitive and often used by Clubs and County as an opportunity to trial new players eager to play at a high level. Traditionally The A Team consists of a mixture of Colts and Mid Age players.
Matches and Competition
Matches are usually played in 8, 10 or 12 man teams across 36 holes of foursomes and singles.
The season starts in February with around 15 planned matches though out the year against some of the best clubs in the County ending with the usual Captain's Match against Burhill GC in late November.
If a home side defeats the invited County A Team on their home turf, they are awarded an engraved Plaque with the winning score during the Surrey AGM to proudly hang in their clubhouse.
As of 2026, The A Team will also compete in the South East Group's Challenge League which follows the same format as the First Team League. 3 matches are played either home or away against other counties with practice rounds taking place on Saturday afternoons and matchdays following on the Sunday. The winners of the league proceed to the finals in October against the winners of the North division.
