English Seniors Champions Surrey take on Welsh Champions Glamorgan

Surrey Seniors kicked off the 2024 season with a match against Welsh Champions Glamorgan at the wonderful Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club.

Like Surrey, Glamorgan were unbeaten in all competitions last year winning both National & Regional titles. The team were ably supported on this trip by Terry Casey (SCG Chairman) & Steve McNeill (County Secretary).

Match captain Ian Attoe (in absence of Team captain David Boxall due to injury) led off the first day foursomes with Ian Barker and duly prevailed over the strong lead Glamorgan pair. This was closely followed by wins from Keith Waters & Andrew Inglis then Simon Crockett & Les Bruckner to make it 3-0 to Surrey.

In match 4, Tom Hawkins & Peter Jackson made a winning par on the long 18th to secure a further half point and although Chris Lane & James Weigall fought hard on the back nine they succumbed to the final Glamorgan pair 2&1.

Day 1 Score: Glamorgan 1.5 Surrey 3.5

After a lovely dinner in the newly refurbished P&K clubhouse where we were joined by Wales Men's Captain Jonathan Williams, Club Captain Simon Howell, Club President John Savile, Club Secretary Simon Hopkin, Glamorgan County Secretary Martin Price and Glamorgan Seniors Captain Jeff Thomas.

the group stayed in the Tower Hotel in Swansea before making the short drive back to contest the 10 singles matches with all to play for.

Day 2 was a bit more windy and cold with players and officials searching in suitcases and cars for more layers.

The top of the order was a tight run affair from the start but Surrey proved too strong, winning the first 3 matches by the narrowest of margins.

Although Simon Crockett and Chris Lane would lose on the 17th, Andy Inglis was able to turn the tide of Glamorgan wins when he fought back from being 2 down after 9 holes to win his match. More winning points followed from Les Bruckner, Ian Barker, James Weigall, and Tom Hawkins, with a last hole half point from Peter Jackson to secure an 11-4 win for Surrey in the inaugural Champions Trophy.

Pyle and Kenfig were wonderful hosts for this match.

Glamorgan were a fantastic team and the match was played in great sprit. Hopefully this match between the National Champions of England and Wales will become an annual fixture.
