The annual MUGS match between Surrey and BB&O U16 teams was held at Huntercombe Golf Club in Oxfordshire on Friday 23rd August. The format was 4 foursomes matches in the morning, followed by 8 singles matches in the afternoon.
The first pair out in the foursomes was Finlay Fergusson and Josh Jackson, who was making his U16 Surrey debut at only 12 years of age! Both boys played well but struggled on the greens, however they were able to secure a half point on the 18th. This was the same result in match three for Henry Bale and Josh Stimson.
In match two, Surrey was represented by Teddy Shaw and Christos Pillay, and in match four by Jamie Botton and George Molloy. Both these matches were hard fought but unfortunately both went the way of BB&O, meaning that at lunch, the score line read Surrey 1 - BB&O 3.
As the boys tucked in to a fantastic lunch of fish & chips, they were very lucky to have the opportunity to listen to a talk from former Executive Director of the European Tour, Ken Schofield. Ken talked about life on tour and recounted some very interesting stories of players such as Seve Ballesteros and Bernard Langer, which was a unique experience for the boys.
Fuelled up on fish & chips and feeling inspired after listening to Ken, the boys headed out for the afternoon singles, knowing that some great golf would be required to overturn the 3-1 deficit.
Surrey began the afternoon session very well, taking early leads in nearly all of the singles matches. Despite some very good golf from the BB&O players in the afternoon, Surrey managed to convert almost all these leads into wins, taking 7 of the 8 afternoon singles matches.
This meant that the overall score was Surrey 8 - BB&O 4, a brilliant turnaround from being 3-1 down after the morning foursomes. Henry Bale made an excellent speech as Surrey team captain on the day.

We thank Huntercombe GC and the MUGS for their excellent hospitality, they are incredibly generous in running this match every year, and we really do appreciate it.
The U16 team now look forward to defending the trophy at West Hill Golf Club in 2025!
