Anthony Rossi & Peter Burtonshaw win the Fourball County Card Meeting at Hankley Common
A full field of 72 players (36 pairs) teed it up at the fantastic Hankley Common Golf Club on Wednesday 9th October for the eighth county card meeting of the season. The format of the day was a fourball better ball stableford off the yellow tees, with prizes for the top three pairs, as well as two nearest the pin prizes for the 2nd & 16th holes.
The first players teed off in cold but very calm conditions, with hardly a breath of wind, making for good scoring conditions. The event was a two-tee start, off the 1st and 10th tees, with the starting being carried out by Roger Vincent and Terry Casey. The golf course was in exceptional condition, especially given all the rain that had come down in the days preceding the event, and the players were very excited to get out onto the course!
Of the early groups, the leading score was a better ball total of 40 stableford points from Matt Middleton & Kevin Carmichael, both from Clandon Regis GC. As the day went on, this score was matched by four other pairs, demonstrating the good scoring conditions.
Three groups behind Matt & Kevin, Alan Page from Purley Downs and his partner Peter Gallagher from Betchworth Park returned a score of 41 points to sit atop the leader board. This score was matched by Michael Simson and David Webb from Coombe Hill, although Alan & Peter remained at the top of the leader board due to their better back nine.
However, their time at the top was to be short lived, as Anthony Rossi & Peter Burtonshaw from Dulwich & Sydenham Hill returned a fantastic score of 44 points!
As the remaining scores were returned, no other pairs were able to match Anthony's and Peter's score of 44 points, and so they were crowned as the winners of the Hankley Common Fourball County Card Meeting for 2024!
Once all the cards had been returned, the final scores read as follows:
1st Place - Anthony Rossi (Dulwich) & Peter Burtonshaw (Dulwich) - 44 points
2nd Place - Alan Page (Purley Downs) & Peter Gallagher (Betchworth Park) - 41 points
3rd Place - Michael Simson (Coombe Hill) & David Webb (Coombe Hill) - 41 points
Nearest the pin 2nd hole - David Wharrier (Tandridge)
Nearest the pin 16th hole - Kevin Carmichael (Clandon Regis)
