John Ling KO Rules

To be eligible to compete in any Surrey County Championship or to represent the County in a match, a player must:

i) Be of Amateur Status as defined by the R&A.
ii) Be an affiliated member of a Surrey Golf Club
iii) Have a valid handicap index in the Worldwide Handicap System
iv) Not have taken part in a Championship of another County affiliated to England Golf and not have been coached by or represented another County affiliated to England Golf during the same calendar year.

To be eligible for our championships and knockouts, a player must meet the age and handicap index requirements as detailed in Appendix A of the Surrey Golf Rules & Regulations which can be downloaded from the website.

All entries shall be subject to approval by the Championship Committee who reserve the right to accept or refuse any entry. The Committee's decision shall be final and the reason for the decision may be withheld.

To be considered valid, an entry form and the requisite entry fee must be with the Surrey Golf office at the closing date of each competition. For junior competitions, this includes submission of the Player Profile & Parental Consent Form.

Playing Handicap allowances are based on the WHS Playing Handicap Mandatory Allowances Table.

The knockouts will be open to all players who are an affiliated member of a Surrey Golf Club.

All Surrey Knockouts will be played under the rules of the R&A and local rules as per the hosting Clubs, unless otherwise advised.

All matches must be played to a conclusion until the overall competition result is decided.

A player may represent their Club in as many of the knockouts as required but they may not represent more than one Club in the same knockout.

Assuming the previous year's finalists are in the draw, they will be seeded in each of the knockouts.

Home Clubs/players are reminded that is it the rules of the competition to allow the players of the away team to play a practice round at a rate equal to or less than the members' introduced guest rate prior to the match date.

The home team/player is expected to offer at least three mid-week dates to their opponents to play the match. These dates must be offered in a timely manner, if none of these dates are acceptable to the visitors and no other mutually acceptable date is agreed, then both teams will be disqualified. We suggest that matches are played sooner rather than later. The Competition Committee's decision is final.

WHILST IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE HOME TEAM TO OFFER DATES, IT IS EXPECTED THAT ALL TEAMS/PLAYERS WILL MUTUALLY AGREE TO PLAY THEIR MATCHES BEFORE THE COMPLETION DATE OF EACH ROUND.

No extensions will be given.

Each team shall consist of ten players aged 55 years or older on the day of the match.

All players must have a WHS handicap Index on the day of the event, and they must also have at least four competition cards recorded on WHS in the previous twelve-month period (new for 2024).

Five pairs from each Club shall play 18 holes in a fourball better ball match play format. The WHS Playing Handicap mandatory allowance is 90%. Each away player will receive one additional shot added to their playing handicap after all handicap calculations have been applied. However, if one of the players in the away team is also a playing member of the home club, that player does not receive the additional shot. The rest of his team are unaffected, and still receive their additional shot.

Players will play off their handicap index subject to a limit of 24.0. A competitor over the 24.0 handicap index limit may still play in the competition but must play off a handicap index of 24.0.

Players may be changed from one round to the next.

All matches should be played over a course set up as if for a qualifying competition, off the Club's YELLOW tees or equivalent.

Any team knocked out after playing their first match will automatically be entered into the John Ling Salver (this will be in round 2 for those that had a bye or round one for those that did not get a bye).
