Surrey Schools Championships - Thursday 27th June.

Many thanks to everyone Clandon Reigs Golf Club for hosting the Surrey Schools Championships on Thursday 27th June. The course was in excellent condition, with greens that proved tricky for many players. And the warm, dry weather was perfect for golf.

In the Girls Championship, Natalie Ivory of Kingston Grammar School took victory with a gross score of 77. In 2nd place with a score of 81 was Katie Ainsworth representing Reigate Grammar School, while Lucy Agnew of Salesians Chertsey took 3rd with 87 shots.

The same three girls featured in the Girls Nett competition, albeit in a slightly different order, with Lucy Agnew taking victory with a Nett 69, Natalie Ivory in 2nd with a Nett 73, and Katie Ainsworth in 3rd with a Nett 74.

The Girls Team Championship was closely contested, with the Reigate Grammar School team of Katie and Chloe Ainsworth taking the win by one shot from the Salesians Chertsey team of Lucy Agnew and Grace Taylor.

Countback was used to decide the winner of the Boys Championship with two players tied on 74. Harry Weatherhead of Southborough High School took the victory from Aaron Moody of Salesian Chertsey in 2nd place. Countback was also used to decide 3rd place with Joshua Tombs, representing St. Bede's School, just taking the place from Connor Taggart of Riddlesdown Collegiate, both boys scoring 78.

With four players tied on Nett 72 countback was also needed to decide the result. Ethan Kwan, representing Barrow Hills School, took the win, from Connor Taggart in 2nd place and Jack Robinson of Carshalton Boys School in 3rd place, while Tommaso Rossi, representing Reeds, just missed out in 4th place.

The Boys Team Championship was hotly contested this year with 14 teams entered. As with the Girls Team Championship it came down to one shot difference between first and second places, with  the Epsom & Ewell High School team of Christos Pillay and Yumin Do taking the victory on 160 shots, with the Salesians Chertsey team of Aaron Moody and Oliver Kwei in 2nd place with 161 shots.

Congratulations to all the winners, particularly to the top eight boys and top four girls in their respective Scratch Championships, who have earned the offer of a place in the 2025 English Schools South Region Championship (provided they are still under 19 years of age at midnight on 31st August 2024 and still in receipt of full-time education other than Higher Education).

In previous years the top 10 boys and top 5 girls at the  ESGA South Region Championship have qualified for the ESGA National Championship, which, in turn, has been used as a qualifier for the English Schools International match against Wales.
