Finals Day Result for the Surrey Fives, Thornhill Mixed and the Kelso Hamilton Knockouts

On a day that started with the thought that the finals wouldn't go ahead due to the rain that had fallen and the forecast for thundery downpours most of the day, all three finals were completed and apart from one downpour the weather remained somewhat kind.

First to the tee were Ian & Una versus Sarah & Johnnie Edwards from Walton Heath & Mitcham playing in the Thornhill Mixed Foursomes final with just one shot between them. Ian & Una took an early lead which they never relinquished and went onto win 5/4, according to Sarah their opponents played very well.

The Surrey Fives final followed with The Drift taking on Epsom. The Surrey Fives is single match play between teams of 5 and no one player was giving away more than three shots. . The Drift's Darrel Jones took the first match having played an extra hole but Epsom immediately ruled out that win by Ronnie Mears who took the second match 2 up. Paul Danford and Alan Samuels both went onto win their games for The Drift in rounds 3 and 4 which meant that The Drift took the overall win.

The teams were:

Epsom The Drift
Gerard Harrington  Darrel Jones    1 up
Ronnie Mears           2 up  Baz Bailey
Sean Lockyer Paul Danford    2 up
Richard Halifax Alan Samuel     2/1
Tommy Williams Andy Hazel       A/S

The last final to head out was the 4BBB Kelso Hamilton between Brendan Sullivan & Russell Stewart from Richmond Park and Gary Brooks & Barry Kavanagh from The Drift. Brendan & Russel were two up having played nine holes and went onto take the win 3/2.

All three finals were played in great spirit which was wonderful to witness.

Our thanks to Clandon Regis Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and to their President Ian Mitchell for acting as starter and staying with us for the presentation.
