Worplesdon Golf Club played host to the 2025 Seniors County Championship this week in perhaps the most glorious conditions ever experienced at a Surrey Golf event. The golf course looked and played beautifully under the hot sun and the players were really tested by the fiery conditions.
The event is played over 36holes over two days with 60 players teeing it up on day one and the top 30 and ties qualifying for day two.
After Round 1, reigning back to back champion Simon Crockett (Addington Palace) was in a 4 way tie for the lead on 72 (+1) with James Rodger (Hindhead), Fredrik Lindgren (West Byfleet) and Richard Prophet (Walton Heath) with Prophet carding a superb nett 66. The only player in the field to record a nett score in the 60s.
Behind them, the chasing pack was bunched on 74,75 and 76 with the eventual cut falling at 81 meaning 33 players made it through to play on Wednesday morning. Among them was Chobham’s Andy Inglis who carded a 76 to back up his 74 and finish a very respectable 6th. Hindhead’s James Rodger finished on a total of 147 to claim 5th which meant Nigel Pimm’s (Surbiton) steady level par round of 71 shot him up the leaderboard into 4th.
If Prophet had been the star of Day 1 then Les Bruckner (Hindhead) definitely had the round of the day on Day 2 following up his first round 75 with a superb 1 under par 70 which would turn out to be the only under par score of the tournament and would see him finish in 3rd.
Playing alongside one another again, Fredrik Lindgren and Simon Crockett traded blows most of the day and exchanged the lead numerous times throughout their round. Lindgren who was looking to win the Championship for the first time having finished 3rd and 2nd the previous two years had a putt on the 36th hole to take the title but narrowly missed meaning the pair would both sign for 72 and a total of 144.
This took them to a playoff down the 1st hole much to the excitement of the locals and their fellow competitors. After coming up short with his approach into the green Crockett was unable to get down in two leaving Lindgren with a two putt to win. He did not make the same mistake twice and got his hands on the trophy after coming so close the past two years.
Well done Fredrik!
