Surrey Seniors vs Kent Seniors at Purley Downs

Surrey Seniors faced off against Kent Seniors at Purley Downs on Thursday 22nd May in what can only be described as the game of the year!

Ian Attoe (Worplesdon) led the side out striking a beautiful iron onto the green of the Par 3 first hole. Ian would unfortunately go onto lose his match to Danny Holmes who put together a very solid round of golf.

Newly crowned Seniors Champion, Fredrik Lindgren (West Byfleet) did what he does best charging ahead early and going onto win his match on the 15th. Peter Jackson (Woking) would follow Fred’s example and provided another point in a very closely fought match which would prove vital.

Andrew Inglis (Chobham) put up a fantastic fight, taking his match all the way to the 18th before eventually succumbing to a 1-hole loss after a bit of misfortune around the green.

With the match poised at 2-2 and the remaining games all starting to shift in Kents favour the odds were stacked against Surrey whom after 9 holes were down in all but 3 games.

Simon Crockett (Addington Palace) and Nigel Pimm (Surbiton) were both beaten on the 17th having battled hard to extend their matches but falling just short. With the team needing some encouragement, the guys stuck around and cheered on Les Bruckner (Hindhead) to a stressful 5 on the 17th green which was good enough to win his match 2&1 and provide some hope to the team.

Ian Slater (Addington Palace) who had been 5up through 9 holes was looking a little less comfortable until he sunk a 30footer on the treacherous 17th to head to the 18th tee 1up. Ian would go on to hole a nervy 5footer to win his match and level things up once again.

The anchorman, Tom Hawkings (Sunningdale) would live up to his reputation and produce a very good par 4 on the tough 18th hole to provide another point in Surrey’s favour.

This left the stage open to Keith Waters (West Byfleet) to make the day of the home crowd with a fantastic two putt par on the 18th to squeeze out a half match and a 5 ½ - 4 ½ win for Surrey.

It may not have been Miracle and Medinah, but it was Phenomenal at Purley!

Thank you to Kent for a brilliant game and Purley Downs for providing a great venue which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
