On Sunday 15th June our u16 side played our second match in the SEG League at Betchworth Park Golf Club, which was in great condition for the visit of Hampshire and Sussex.
The team for the match was as follows:
Sean Collins (Burhill)
Caelan Dhami (Walton Heath)
Finlay Fergusson (Burhill)
Roland Gibson (Sunningdale)
Aaron Moody (Burhill)
Christos Pillay (Walton Heath)
Darragh Sidhu (Burhill)
Harry Weatherhead (Burhill)
The team was a blend of experienced u16 players, with some SEG League debuts handed to Darragh, Roland and Christos. And, at the halfway point, all the matches were extremely well balanced, and little clues available to know how the day would end.
Darragh Sidhu, who was out first, took both his matches down 18, and was unlucky to only pick up a half point against Hampshire. Finlay Fergusson, playing 2nd, then steadied the ship delivering both wins, after holding out for a strong win against Sussex down the 18th.
Match 3 saw Christos take a good 2&1 over his Hampshire opponent, although Sussex were too strong on the day. Roland Gibson came up against some strong players and battled hard, before ultimately losing out in both matches.
At this stage, the match very much remained in the balance, but the best was yet to come from Surrey.
Match 5 saw Sean Collins deliver a 2&1 victory over Hampshire before delivering a birdie down the last to secure a 2up win against Sussex.
When Caelan Dhami, who produced some clinical golf to deliver 2 comfortable wins, got over the line, it seemed victory was almost certain.
Harry Weatherhead, involved in 2 titanic tussles, produced a final hole birdie giving 1up wins in both matches. Which left the stage clear for Aaron Moody to deliver two more comfortable wins, 7&6 and 3&2, after some stunning golf.
Match result: Surrey 11 – 5 Sussex, Surrey 12 – 4 Hampshire.
With 4 matches played and 4 wins on the board, Surrey has now amassed an unassailable lead at the top of the league, with one fixture remaining against Hampshire and Kent at Sandford Springs in 2 weeks.
