The final of the Surrey County Championships between Harry Crockett and Dan Magee was an excellent display of golf at the end of six rounds in three days, played over the beautifully presented and challenging Coombe Hill course.
The final started with Dan holing from 20ft for a birdie at the first to go 1up and after the second was halved in pars, Dan went 2up at the third with an incredible shot. Having driven his ball just through the fairway, into the long grass and slightly obscured by a tree, he hit a great shot that skipped up the green, bounced a second time before landing in the hole for an eagle two!
Both players birdied the 4th to halve the hole but then Dan extended his lead to 3up with a two put birdie at the par 5 5th. Dan’s fine play continued at the 6th and 7th holes as Harry worked hard to stay in touch, with the 6th being halved in pars and the 7th in birdies. Dan was 3up through 7 holes and six under par!
Harry needed to respond to Dan’s hot start and that began at the difficult uphill 8th, Two good shots and a solid par was enough to get one back after Dan just missed his par putt. Both players hit quality shots into the tricky par 3 9th and the hole was halved, Dan 2up at the turn.
A rare wayward drive from Dan at the 10th allowed Harry pinch another hole back and after a deft chip in for birdie from behind the 11th green, suddenly the match was all square! Both players hit the par 3 12th green, Dan with an excellent shot to 10ft but his putt just missed the edge and the hole was halved in pars.
The 13th saw the match swing back in Dan’s favour after Harry’s approach hopped long and he was unable to get up and down with his 5ft par putt staying out. The 14th was halved in regulation 4’s and both players hit the par 5 15th green in two, albeit some distance from the hole. Faced with long putts Dan rolled his effort beautifully to the hole side, Harry however, misjudged the pace of his putt and was unable to convert his 5ft birdie putt to match.
With Dan now in the commanding position 2up with 3 to play both players faced the demanding uphill 16th hole. After two excellent drives Dan hit a very good approach to a perfect spot 15ft under the hole. Harry’s sharp turning birdie putt from past the hole some how stayed out and was a valent effort. That now left Dan with a putt to win the match, which he rolled perfectly into the middle of the hole for a very deserved 3&2 victory!
The final was a fine display of quality match play golf which included six birdies and an eagle from Dan!
Our thanks must go to our hosts for the Championship’s Coombe Hill Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and superbly presented and challenging golf course.
