The South Eastern Group Junior Qualifier was hosted by Surrey at the beautiful Clandon Regis on Thursday 3rd July.

After weeks of sunshine the course was playing shorter than normal with the balls running and running however the same could be said for the greens which were as good as any across the county and provided a stiff test for the players.

The event itself consists of 6 man teams from 11 different counties. The players played 36 holes with five scores counting from the six each round with the winners progressing to Haywards Heath for the county finals later this year.

Having won the qualifier and individual prize at the 2023 qualifier before going on to win the final the Surrey team were eager to replicate their previous success with the added the benefit of doing it on home soil.

The team was as follows;

Josh Thompson (Wentworth)

Aaron Moody (Burhill)

James Brash (Burhill)

Harry Weatherhead (Burhill)

Oscar Lent (Walton Heath)

Harvey Skelly (Betchworth Park)

Things didn’t go overly to plan in round 1 for the Surrey boys but a new course record of 65, (7 under par) from Aaron Moody gave some hope to the team who headed back out in the heat to chase down Hertfordshire who had a commanding 10 shot lead.

Sadly for the local favourites this would prove too much to overcome, and Surrey would eventually have to settle for 3rd place on +12. Essex finished strongly on claimed second with a -3 total. Hertfordshire played some fantastic golf throughout the day and managed to improve on their already impressive start to finish on a total of 705 (15 under par).

Louie Bloxham (Hertfordshire) won the individual prize on -10 with Toby Peters (Essex) narrowly missing out on countback.

Well done Louie and Hertfordshire! Good luck in the finals.
