On Monday 4th August our U15 & U16s took to the fairways of Windlesham to compete for The James Heath Trophy and Stevens Cup.
The format is simple, 36holes scratch with the lowest gross in the 1st round for both categories being a qualifier for the Justin Rose Junior Telegraph finals in Portugal.
In the U15 section Zahn Bopiah led after round 1 firing a 75 which given the weather conditions and feeling under the weather himself was a very strong start.
Finlay Fergusson would better this by 2 in the U16 category and state his claim for a trip to the Algarve courtesy of 2 eagles on the back 9.
As things got tighter over the afternoon the weather gradually improved and allowed some great golf to be played although Windlesham bit back with some undulating greens and tucked pin positions.
Zahn Bopiah (Sunningdale) was able to hold onto his lead and win The James Heath Trophy with a 2-round total of 154.
Second was Luke Jackson (Sunningdale Heath) on 159 after a good afternoon round of 75.
Alex Mowbray (West Byfleet) also finished on 159 but took third on count back.
Playing in the final game holding a narrow lead Finlay Fergusson (Burhill) had the benefit of seeing what those in front of him had done and was able to respond accordingly but with that come the pressure to perform. Fortunately for the Burhill man he was up to the task and closed with a total of 147 to take The Stevens Cup home with him.
Kodi Dean also of Burhill was second with a total of 152.
In third was Teddy Shaw who fought really hard for a second-round score of 74 despite a double bogey on the last to take 3rd with 153.
While there are no prizes for it, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of many of the players who stuck at it in some pretty grim conditions after recording some high numbers early on (including numbers double digit scores). It would have been easy to throw the towel in and go home but they did not. They kept their head down and smiled their way through it which is something we really respect and applaud them for!
Thank you to Windlesham for putting on a fantastic event. The course was set up perfectly for a Championship and we really appreciate the support of the club and the members.
