Hampshire v Surrey  Mens South East League

The first team played our 2nd match of the Qualifying League section away to Hampshire at the wonderful Hayling GC. Following the narrow home defeat by Sussex at West Hill in June only a win would keep our hopes alive.

Winds were light early on but would strengthen through the day to pose a challenge to both teams.

The morning foursomes pairs for Surrey were-

  • Luke Stock & Dan Magee
  • Max O Hagan (Capt) &
  • Freddie Surgey
  • David Corben & Alex Wells

Alastair Kinnaird & Will Dugdale

The early exchanges were in Surrey’s favour winning the opening par 3 hole in 3 of the 4 matches before opening a couple of hole lead in the top two matches and also going well in the the back two games.

Hampshire as always will never lie down and battled back to make the hour or so around the turn a bit nervy but Surrey found second wind hitting several great shots down the stretch to go 4-0 in front at Lunch.

The top pair of Luke & Dan winning 4&2 followed by a victory of 2&1 for Captain Max and subsequent wins of 2 up & 3&2 from the anchor pairs of David & Alex and then Will & Alastair put us in control heading into the afternoon singles.

Hampshire as expected loaded their front order and came out firing.

Luke went out in the lead match and despite being 3 down early on turned his match around in the back nine to win a valuable point again gone against one of Hampshire’s top players Joe Buenfeld winning 3&1.

Fred played some of the best golf of the day but just couldn’t shake off the talented George Saunders losing 3&2.

Captain Max was in the 3rd match against Hampshire Captain Toby Burden. Birdies and holes were exchanged until Max won 15 & 16 before winning 2&1.

This meant Surrey had a least secured a drawn match but this wasn’t enough.

News was flying around the Officials Team chat of scores from the vital mid and late order matches.

Alex battled hard but succumbed to Stuart Archibald 3&2 but joy was soon to arrive with news of our 2025 County Champion, Dan, winning 3&2 over Richard Harris.

David & Alastair battled valiantly losing to Rob Wheeler and Sam De’ath respectively before Will hit 2 beautiful iron approaches on the 17th & 18th score a deserved half point against the Hampshire stalwart Martin Young.

Final score-

Hampshire 4.5

Surrey 7.5

Onto to Chislehurst GC in Kent on Aug 18th where again only a victory will see our season extended to the SE League Final in October.
