The Surrey U15 Team headed to Slinfold Golf Club in Sussex on Sunday 12th October to attempt to retain the Triangular Shield. The team was the perfect blend of the younger members of our u16 SEG League winning squad and some of our talented u14 boys who also won their league stepping up.
In match 1, Caelan Dhami met a Sussex player in scintillating form which led to a 5&3 defeat, and unfortunately a birdie down the last from his opponent was enough to give Hampshire a 1up win, leaving Caelan empty handed.
Match 2 looked ominous, with Yumin Do, down by 3 holes to both his opponents early on, however his ‘never-say-die’ attitude kept him in the match, and when he rolled in a 10ft birdie putt on the last, he had somehow managed to produce 2 halves.
Aurelius Lynarko suffered a 7&5 defeat to an impressive Sussex opponent in match 3, however he balanced the books with a 2&1 win over Hampshire.
Josh Jackson produced the performance of the day from a Surrey perspective in match 4, producing a scintillating performance to produce 8&6 and 4&3 wins, registering 2 vital points for Surrey.
Match 5 saw captain Zahn Bopiah also return 1 point with a comfortable 5&4 victory over his Sussex opponent, but losing out to Hampshire 2&1.
And when match 6 went the same way, with Luke Jackson taking a 6&4 win over Hampshire, but losing 5&4 to Sussex, it was clear that the match was going all the way to the wire.
Brian Kim was involved in an intense tussle with both opponents, losing out narrowly to Sussex 2&1, however a great par down the last gave the 1up victory over Hampshire.
Unfortunately, match 8 didn’t go our way with Darragh Sidhu losing both matches, 4&2 and 2&1.
Final score: Sussex 21, Surrey 16, Hampshire 11.
Congratulations to Sussex who played some fantastic golf to get the team win. However still it was a fantastic experience for this young squad, who will look forward to the chance to exact revenge in the SEG u16 League next year.
